SST/PC Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger Simulation Program

PFR Logo

SST/PC is a computer program that evaluates the thermal and hydraulic performance of complex shell and tube heat exchangers. Feed-effluent heat exchangers, characterized by simultaneous phase changes of shell and tube side fluids over wide temperature ranges, are accurately accounted for by SST/PC's stepwise procedure.

SST/PC's stepwise procedure divides each heat exchanger into a number of smaller sections. The localized heat transfer, pressure drop and mean temperature are obtained for each section and then integrated for the entire exchanger. When a series of exchangers is involved, the convergence procedure determines the intermediate conditions between bundles and performances of each shell. This procedure results in greater accuracy than can be obtained form overall exchanger methods. The stepwise procedure eliminates the need for weighted or corrected log mean temperature differences, which can be inaccurate and invalid in many process applications.

SST/PC contains three methods for rating heat exchangers:

  1. Check Rating - From specified stream terminal conditions, physical properties and exchanger geometry, the program calculates the over or under design, heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops.
  2. Evaluating Exit Conditions - From specified stream inlet conditions, physical properties and geometry, the program determines the exit conditions.
  3. Find Fouling Resistance - SST/PC determines the overall fouling resistance from measured field data which can be used for maintenance planning and energy conservation studies.
